This time the news was directly anticipated by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Sovereignty, Francesco Lollobrigida with a post on social media: the 12 tons of extra virgin olive oil of dubious origin seized in an oil mill.

While we wait for an official announcement from the police, we remain with the Minister’s assertion. That is, following an inspection carried out at the port of Salerno, in Campania, the Carabinieri for the protection of agri-food of Reggio Calabria and the Fraud Repression Inspectors of Cosenza have seized the 12 tons of oil present in a Corigliano-Rossano oil mill, declared as extra virgin olive oil of Italian origin, but without any document to prove its origin.

The port-oil mill connection of this judicial police operation and the high quantity of seized product obviously lead one to think that the oil came from foreign countries, but It will be up to the judiciary to take its steps, ascertain the truth and issue the consequent provisions. Certainly for Minister Lollobrigida this new operation, which it adds to those already recorded, especially in Puglia and Abruzzo, is a sign of the valuable work that the police and the Fraud Repression inspectors carry out on a daily basis in defense of quality, legality and honest producers.

And the Minister’s final message is clear and unequivocal: “Strict controls and zero tolerance against food fraud.”
