I was in Pacoima for an event and as I was driving back to the Pasadena area, I realized I'd be passing close to Altadena Bakery in north Burbank off of Glenoaks. I'd be wanting to try their trompe-l’œil pastries for a minute and I'm assuming many of you have seen these on social media at some point because, as the young people say, they are very 'Grammable.

But are they any good? I was headed to a bday party for my nephew anyway so I picked up a trio for folks to try.

Verdict: They're really good. Like, wow. Sure, part of it is the design itself: like the cacao pod was done beautifully and the orange legit looks like an orange at first glance. The mushroom — which looks Mario Bros. inspired but what do I know? — is more fantastical than realistic and alas, even though they put some kind of adhesive on the base, I don't recommend you buy this unless you plan on eating it there because it will tip over if you even slightly tilt the box.

But even sans design, these were delicious. The exterior is made from chocolate that easily breaks open with a fork or spoon. Inside, there's different flavored mousse: the orange tasted like a creamsicle, the cacao bean had a (what else?) chocolate mousse, and the mushroom was hazelnut-flavored. Every single one of these had my family wanting to try another bite. 9/10

At $10/each, these aren't exactly cheap and I wouldn't necessarily make a trip on a whim to buy more but for a special occasion I'd totally do it again.
