A stunning Mediterranean island has been named the warmest place in Europe, with balmy winter temperatures. The hottest place in Europe depends on the season, but the historic capital of Malta frequently tops the list for year-round warmth, boasting an annual average of 22.3C.
Located further south than the African capitals Algiers and Tunis, temperatures regularly climb to 27C in August, while in February they hover around 15C. However, if the climate isn’t enough to catch a flight, UNESCO’s description might just be.
It deemed the World Heritage Site “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world”, where visitors can wander through winding streets to discover 320 monuments within the tiny walkable area of 0.21 sq miles.
Highlights include St John’s Co-Cathedral, renowned for its opulent interior and Caravaggio paintings, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, with panoramic views across the Grand Harbour.
In the evenings, the city comes alive with bars, live music and waterfront dining. Plus, thanks to its small size, everything is walkable.
Food is another major draw. Thanks to Malta’s location close to North Africa, local cuisine blends European and Arabic influences.
Visitors can sample sweet treats such as imqaret, which are deep-fried pastries filled with dates, or savoury dishes like brungiel mimli — roasted aubergine stuffed with meat, garlic and mint.
Having originally been built as a fortress that came under attack from major sieges, much of Valletta’s story is hidden below ground.
Visitors can explore historic tunnels once used by troops to move through the city undetected and transport supplies during times of conflict.
The formidable defensive walls are one of the city’s most striking features today, having been constructed after the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of St. John defended against an Ottoman invasion.
Those eager to learn more about Valetta’s turbulent past can head to one of the many museums. Highlights include the National Museum of Archaeology, the Palace Armoury, and the Lascaris War Rooms.
Flights to Valletta from the UK take just over three hours.
