Eighteen layers that I tried to keep as even as my amateur skills would allow. It was a bit of work and all I want to do is sit on the couch now, but it was well worth it.

This recipe is from her book Sift. I don’t see it posted on her blog, but found a nearly identical recipe that I’ll link in the comments.

If you scroll to the bottom of [this post](https://kitchenprojects.substack.com/p/kitchen-project-100-party-cake?utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true) from Nicola’s blog, Kitchen Projects, there is a recipe for Chocolate Party Cake. The process is exactly the same as the recipe in her book, with a couple exceptions: I did not soak the cake; the recipe I followed called for three 6in cake pans (not two 8in pans) so it only needed to bake for 20-25 min (not 30); once cooled, each cake was cut into three 1cm layers (9 layers in total). The ingredient list I followed is also slightly different, see below.

    **CAKE INGREDIENTS**

    90g butter (melted)

    90g vegetable oil

    105g light brown sugar

    165g granulated sugar

    2 whole eggs

    75g warm/room temp brewed coffee

    1 tsp flaky sea salt

    210g AP flour

    50g cocoa powder

    ⅓ tsp baking soda

    1½ tsp baking powder

    210g sour cream

    **BUTTERCREAM INGREDIENTS**

    90g light brown sugar

    300g heavy cream

    300g dark chocolate

    350g butter (softened)

    60g cocoa powder

The recipe in her blog is less involved and probably just as good. A great option if you want to spend less time in the kitchen!

I got gifted Sift for Christmas, but I’m really intimidated by a lot of her recipes! How do you find the difficulty level of her recipes?
