This is how a lot of chain restaurants (chillis, applebees, outback, etc) make their ribs. All pre-cooked and just put in the oven with a ton of sauce when someone orders them. I had a friend that worked in the kitchen of one of these fine stablishments.

I was told 30 years ago it was Dr Pepper 🤣

I’m not hating on boiled ribs- they are what they are. You can make a very tasty product with that route and the soda thing sounds solid- reminds me of how Mexicans often throw some Coca Cola in their carnitas to give color and flavor.

I’ve seen turkeys injected with mountain dew before deep frying…

If it tastes good to drink it’ll taste good in your food. Same thing when cooking with wine.

So this exact thing I don’t think is correct but there’s a nugget of truth. Legit Mexican Carnitas that is fried pork shoulder in lard. It is not uncommon for people to add Coca-Cola in as well because it caramelizes and adds some color and flavor.

I boiled my ribs in salt water and then finished them on a super hot grill caramelizing the bbq sauce. They are pretty great. I don’t cook ribs as often since I stopped

I have a hack pulled pork recipe where the marinade base is a full “coke” of any kind, in a crockpot for hours…. I’ve used coke, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper. All great!!

When I met my future father in law like almost 14 years ago, he was boiling ribs… We never got along after that 😂

Not ribs, but I have smoked pork butts injected then marinated in cherry Pepsi and finished the next day in crock pots (with more cherry Pepsi and sauce) got me more compliments than ever on pulled pork.. once again not ribs boiled or poached but still.. idk to each their own I guess

A distinction should be made between boiling and braising. Boiling at 212F is different than the slow simmer during braising (180-190F). It’ll may still work out boiling, but it’ll be inferior to the braised version. A Pepsi and beef stock braise sounds pretty good

It’s gonna get hated on, but if you don’t have a smoker, this method tastes pretty great.
The way I’ve done it is a little more involved than just “boil them in coke”, but that’s the biggest / longest step.
Appropriate_Exit_206
I just can’t imagine making ribs better than the ones I’ve done on an offset. But gotta try at least once
Its_scottyhall
I’ve made a Pepsi marinade with soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar, etc before and it slaps. Crazy as good ribeyes … Soda can be interesting with meat…
Don’t be afraid to experiment, even if it isn’t awesome, you might learn something you can use in a different application.

I tried this once.

Very common actually. A lot of restaurants will steep in cola to dissolve connective tissue in the muscles. Some will re-purpose the liquid as a boiling liquid.

i heard of ribs being boiled in beer for a couple of hours before going on the grill

Boiling ribs? I can also understand marinating but boiling is preposterous, crockpot understandable. Chili’s use to have a dr pepper bbq sauce. Look up jack and coke bbq sauce and thank me later

Cheerwine pulled pork ftw

I used to boil and then crock pot in sauce, then bbq. Very tasty.

It’s not BBQ, but in Mexico they use Coca-Cola to make carnitas.

How exactly is boiling meat barbecue?

Not boiling, but my marinade for Korean kalbi includes 7-Up and I’m convinced the carbonation helps tenderize it.

I’ve known of it for 50 years. We use coke though. It works.

I’ve been grilling ribs for 40 years and have never boiled them

Why is Dr. Pepper using Pepsi for this?
