    Happy New Year everyone!

For those unfamiliar with the producer, here’s my summary of the history as detailed on the Produttori website: The winery dates back to 1894 (I think maybe this is a stretch honestly) when a co-op of landowners and farmers lead by Domizio Cavazza began labeling their wine Barbaresco, distinguishing it from the, itself still nascent, neighboring Barolo. Called Cantine Sociali di Barbaresco, the co-op ended in the 1920s but, inspired by Cavazza, Don Fiorino Marengo founded another in 1958 under the name Produttori del Babaresco.

Today, there are 50 co-op members producing 12 wines: a Langhe Nebbiolo, their standard Barbaresco, and 10 single vineyard Riserva bottlings.

The wine is medium concentration ruby with a garnet rim. It has lots of tart, crunchy red berry fruit (cranberry, pomegranate). There’s some nice turned soil and sweet tobacco alongside the fruit.

As expected from Nebbiolo/Barbaresco DOCG, high tannin and high acid; it’s really turning my gums into sandpaper. Alcohol is listed as 14.5%. The wine has a pretty full body, more-so than average I’d say for Barbaresco or Barolo and definitely more-so than the 2020 Muncagota vineyard Riserva I had from the producer a couple of months ago.

I was patient enough to wait about 15 minutes after decanting it to begin drinking. It’s becoming more expressive as it spends time in the decanter; specifically, it’s starting to show a little brighter and more vibrant with a bit of that dried rose petal quality often present in Nebbiolo.

This wine is really nice; I’m enjoying it; it strikes me as age-worthy and I suspect it won’t reach its potential for several years yet. My suggestion, if drinking now, would be to decant it for 90 min – 2 hours. I bought it for $44.99 here in northwest NJ.

    Cheers! 🙂

All my local stores still only have the 2020 🙁

It’s a really serious wine for <$50 from a prestige region. Good stuff.

    I love that wine. I have a 2018 and a 2019 in my cellar

  5. I wonder how long I’ll be able to sit on my 2021 myself, definitely don’t think I can wait too long, I’ll just have to decant! Thanks for the notes.

I got four of these and I’m planning on keeping them at least 3-5 years.

This sounds lovely, and to my surprise, I can get it at my favorite wine store! Thanks for the tip.
