Ask any pizza-heads and slice fanatics in East and South London where they’re favourite pizzerias in the city are, and you’ll likely hear one name pop up time and time again: 081 Pizzeria. The Peckham-hailing pizzeria was recognised among the top 50 pizzerias in all of Europe, and opened a second location in Shoreditch last year. But now they’re throwing authenticity out of the window as they prepare to open a Bri-talian fusion pizzeria in Peckham: Connie’s Pizza.

Connie’s Pizza will open in Peckham on January 26. And they’re welcoming early visitors with a special discount. Diners can enjoy 25% off the bill at Connie’s Pizza until the end of February.

But before you baulk at the fusion pizza concept, bear this in mind – the pizzeria has an adorable story behind its inception. 081 Pizzeria founder, Andrea Asciuti, was inspired to create the new pizzeria to pay homage to his family and his daughter’s British-Italian heritage. It’s even named after his wife, Connie. In their own words, Connie’s Pizza is “Italian born, London raised – and here to do London pizza properly.”

The pizzas at Connie’s Pizza are similar to a popular crispy style of pizza that has become synonymous with London in recent years. Think of the queue-demanding pies from Crisp Pizza, and you’ll be on the right track. But Connie’s Pizza is going even further with the idea of a British pizza style for their menu. They’re ignoring Italian traditions and ideas about what does and doesn’t go on top of a slice, and drawing inspiration from British produce and flavours.

The pizzas blend “Italian technique with quintessential British flavours”. Diners can expect light, chewy, and ‘never-floppy’ pizza bases with seasonal British ingredients and flavours. These include leeks, mushrooms, aubergine, chicken, pork, and more.

Flavours at Connie’s Pizza

That’s not to say that there is nothing on the menu for purists. Instead, the pizzas shine a light on top-notch British ingredients, rather than only using imported Italian produce. The menu still features the likes of a classic Margherita, and an Nduja pie. Except the former features British Mozzarella and the latter uses British Stracciatella.

Other flavours on the menu include the Tomato and Aubergine Pie, and a pizza with Sauteed Mushrooms, Truffle & Basil. Plus, there are plenty of side dishes to enjoy, too, such as Meatballs, Deep-fried Mac ‘n’ Cheese, and Mozzarella Sticks. And for those who need a sweet treat to round out the meal, there’s the Fiocco di Neve – a soft mini brioche filled with ricotta and whipped cream.
