ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – A Virginia wine has been recognized in Decanter’s top 50 U.S. wines for the first time.

The British wine media brand’s list included a red wine from Barboursville Vineyards named Octagon. The award went to the vintage Octagon from 2017.

Barboursville’s estate director and winemaker Luca Paschina says he is glad Central Virginia is getting recognized nationally.

“It’s proof for us in Central Virginia and Virginia, but predominately in this area, that we can with high consistency produce a great elegant and age worthy wine,” Paschina said.

Octagon has been recognized in the past, but never within Decanter’s U.S. top 50.

“You really get very touched when you know you can be among the top 50 or 4,000 wines that were tasted so it’s a big deal,” Paschina said. “2017 was a great vintage by the way.

The top 50 recognition comes as Barboursville prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary this spring.
