On opening, the wine shows an immediate, pronounced ethylene / solvent-like aroma, even reminiscent of baijiu (for those who know about spirits). Suggests advanced oxidation or elevated volatile acidity. The nose is sharp and aggressive, with high acidity and little aromatic depth or complexity.
After one hour of aeration, the structure continues to fade. The palate becomes thin and watery, with diminished fruit presence. What remains is a light body dominated by alcohol. First time trying Faustino and my first impression is similar to that of supermarket wine (might get my hand slapped for this one but it’s my opinion for a first bottle).

Also forgot to mention, 169 rmb or 21 euros approximately
This is a very common supermarket wine here in Denmark, and it’s regularly on sale for the equivalent of €13/$16. At that price it’s a bargain, but I don’t buy it myself.
Are you meant to age a $16 wine for 15 years
Great notes, I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy it. Tried a younger one last year (I think it was a 2022): strong cherry depth both on the nose and palate, high abv. Not super complex, but I remember it made me drift philosophically. Slightly reminiscent of Italian Amarone. I enjoyed it, good value for price imo.
Huge fan of Faustino Uno. I’ve had very different experiences that what you describe. 10+ years of fine aging, at a very affordable price. I drink quite a lot of wine and this is one of my fav price/pleasure ratio.
It is a supermarket wine where I live. But supermarkets in Europe usually have a decent selection.
Over here in the states, I’ve found a few Riojas that have been both aged and bargain priced. No names come to mind right now. But, when I was a graduate student first getting into wine on a low budget, a Friday night treat was getting together with friends at the local Ethiopian BYOB restaurant and a couple of bottles of Rioja. Kinda miss those days when life was simpler.
Discounter/supermarket wine in Switzerland, regularly on sale. But a good one.
Might be one of the worst Rioja producers out there
