I don’t want to sound like an ass but were you not gonna tip? That’s what the Service Charge is right?

  2. TheMoneyOfArt

Personally I want to but I’ve got a neck thing going on that means I’m only good for five minutes or so

  3. Status_Green_6055

You can easily have the surcharge removed. But yeah I feel you, the extra charges make me so mad that I never want to eat out. They are profiting off us big time!!

  4. 4r4r4real

I’m sorry but 3 glasses of wine, chicken tendies, and CHEESY POTATO HASH is one of the funniest orders I’ve ever seen

Did the sommelier recommend that Pinot to pair with the honey mussie?

  5. SwampAss411

No one eats out anymore? Im currently on OpenTable looking for New Years Eve reservations and looks like plenty of people are eating out.🤷‍♂️

  6. FakeNigerianPrince

So, you got charge for 6 people, but only ordered 5 items?

    Man, that’s wild

  7. Ripple1972Europe

No one should go out and eat that meal, especially for 6 people.

  8. dsalmon1449

No one eats out anymore because you were charged $6 in fees you can ask to be removed and were forced to auto tip 18% due to a party of 6?

  9. MK1_Scirocco

    1. You went to Bandit, which caters to clueless business people that don’t care about prices
    2. You ordered some bizarre choices

  10. 1002003004005006007

You went to what is essentially a club expecting to not be ripped off for food and drink, idk what to tell you. But yeah, bandit sucks. I wouldn’t use it as the baseline to determine whether or not it’s reasonable to eat out anymore though. You just picked a stupid spot.

  11. halibfrisk

You spent $60 on 3 glasses of pinot grigio?

    Seems like a skill issue

  12. Mental_Address

That order for 6+ people?I thought it was a solo dinner then I saw the gratuity..Also why did they calc tax on tip and surcharge?

  13. Stunning-Track8454

Well, before tax and service charge, you paid $41 for 3 glasses of a shit wine. That being said, $18 for tenders, and $9 for cheesy potatoes aren’t too overpriced for a restaurant in Fulton Market.

I do however agree that the “Sunday platform fee” is ridiculous.

  14. Spanish4TheJeff

Perhaps we should bring back pre-gaming at home?

  15. chicki nuggs, cheesy fries, and three glasses of wine. who do you think you are, britney spears ?

  16. mrbangpop

you’re getting roasted for highlighting the 18% gratuity but getting charged an additional $7.37 on a $70 check (that’s 10% extra) aside from that is complete bullshit

  17. CryptoSlayer20

I never allow surcharges. They are bullshit that the restaurant gets to keep. I have them removed and tip the server well. I don’t enjoy eating out anymore.

  18. Prudent-Result1057

Right message wrong messenger 😂 but I do want to emphasize right message because it is getting ridiculous out here

  19. Porter_Dog

$18 for chicken tenders is a crime in and of itself. The credit card charge I see all the time but wtf is a Sunday platform?

Edit: TIL it’s a payment platform.

Is this a shitpost? Why did anyone upvote this?

  21. spicolie22

I know the restaurant business is tough, but I cannot stand the “surcharge” bullshit. Just increase your prices already.

And I will never come to terms with how beverages are used as the primary profit tool. Not saying Europe is the end-all gold standard for society, but you pay less at a restaurant for a *bottle* of good wine there than a glass here.

  22. redditeatsitsownass2

I aways ask about “service charges” now, prior to ordering. If you have one, I’m out and never to return. Kindly go fuck yourselves.

  23. amalgaman

Half your bill is Pinot Grigio. Wine by the glass has been overpriced since 1372.

  24. Holly_Beth_1227

You can thank the credit card companies for the 3.5%+ surcharge. That is the cost the restaurant is paying to accept all those rewards credit cards. No, the banks don’t give you those rewards out of the goodness of their hearts. Merchants pay for them. They’re just passing the costs back to you.

Free game from someone in the industry, if you care:

Service charges CAN be distributed in full to staff, but it technically doesn’t have to be. It’s considered business income, and can be used to cover “related” costs.

Surcharge is an additional GENERAL fee that pretty much serves the same purpose, except the fee can be for anything, and goes straight to the business/corporate.

Service charges are effectively a specific type of surcharge.

Gratuity, obviously goes to service staff directly.

I’ve been told directly by corporate/events team staff how important these contracted parties are, or how important these fees are, because they make these restaurants so much money. They’re constantly stressed about hitting higher and higher sales numbers.

They’re know for a fact guests see these fees and get confused/frustrated. They’re don’t have to care if service staff gets tipped less, i promise I’ve never had or heard a conversation about why I got tipped 10%, 0%, etc. There’s more people that pay without looking at the bill at all, and they bank on that — these surcharges are free money. I’ve personally had more people just hand me their card without even getting the bill, versus asking me to have surcharges removed.

What corporate DOES care about is reviews. So many managers and corpo pencil pushers have lectured me on how you need 20 good reviews to cancel out a bad review, and how it’s important to get to a table before they leave upset so that they can try to buy you off.

If you want to actually get these people’s attention, leave bad reviews about the fees and surcharges. Guests don’t wanna go to places where staff is unhappy, good people won’t wanna work for businesses that make guests unhappy by nickel-and-dining them, because they won’t make money. I promise, you will get these people bending over backwards to make you happy.

This is coming from someone who happens to work somewhere in the city (for real, not the suburbs) that actually doesn’t have a surcharge.

Be on the lookout for “platform service fees” when paying with CC. Some are as high as 8% which is insane. Sunday, Cashdrop & Toast are platforms that allow the establishment to charge customers platform fees.

And it’s not just higher end restaurants, it’s also small corner restaurants, food trucks & taquerias.

  27. ladygettinglost

For those of you who don’t know, Sunday is a payment platform that integrates with the bar/restaurant POS system.

They offer an option to their accounts, where each table gets its own QR code that is linked to their bill. If the customers scans the QR code they can select their items & pay their portion of the bill from their phone.

You can split the bill amongst you & your fellow diners & not have to wait for the server to bring you your bill or collect everyone’s CCs.

Sunday charges a month fee to the bar/restaurant but also charges the customers their platform fee (which will likely cover theCC processing fees). Not sure if the bar/restaurant has the option to absorb the CC fees themselves.

Be aware that “platform fees” are becoming more popular, to offset the CC processing fees, but some places are shady about it.

  28. Onederbat67

Goooodddaaamn nearly 50% in taxes and fees?!?

  29. Yeah that’s a +40% for taxes and fees. And when menu prices are already so high.

  30. Lots of people saying “lol that’s what you get for going to Bandit” as if non-scene, neighborhood spots aren’t charging similar prices. Dining out ANYWHERE is expensive as hell. Make fun of Bandit all you want, I’m not a fan either, but the cost of dining out is high across the board.

Also… lots of people acting like this is a weird order. This is an S-tier tab and I’ve had many tabs looks exactly like this, except it’s savy B for me, instead of the Pinot Grigio.
