I get shrimp in my butcher box each month. We're making shrimp tacos and when I went to rinse them I noticed the shrimp in one bag was gray (how it normally looks), and the other was pink.

Is this normal? The bag for both says "raw gulf shrimp caught in the gulf of mexico". TIA!

Different species. Some species of shrimp are pinkish even before cooking, like *Farfantepenaeus sp.*, and some species are grey before cooking like *Litopenaeus sp*.

Even within a single species though, color can vary according to season and the shrimp’s diet.

Do they smell fine? Peneid shrimp come in grey or pink raw but grey turns pink when cooked *or spoiling* so let your nose guide you.

The range of grey to greyish pink to pink in one batch is concerning.

Argentina shrimp are pink, because they eat kerrol pink small fish, like wild salmon

Did you defrost them in water if so the water might have heated up at some point

Someone grew those shrimp in a mud pond in Bangladesh then put them in a wheelbarrow and hold them 3 miles over dirt terrain in high heat. The pink ones were on top.

If I have a concern I take one and cook it. Taste it.

Here in Costa Rica we have mostly the pink one. Cooked or raw looks the same color.

Just different shrimp color. Keep cooking.

  9. I personally stay away from raw shrimp that has started to turn pink. Grey is the only way. Don’t be surprised if the pink shrimp give you the runs

I personally prefer the orangish ones
