I am poor. Because of this, I am often tasked with getting creative with whatever ingredients are available via my local food pantry. I am very grateful to have this food, and am more than happy to come up with solutions with the goods I’m provided out of the generosity of my neighbors.

I picked up this Whole Foods canned salmon on my most recent trip, and was surprised to realize after I got home that it still had its bones- and boy was it a real pain in the ass to deal with. There were a lot of them, and they weren’t easy to get out.

That said, I decided to make my hard-won salmon meat into a salad with some mayo, spices, and some fermented vegetable mix I had recently made. I then put all that on top of pieces of buttered toast, homemade sourdough from my lovely wife. I ate them alongside homemade quick pickles I had made earlier that day.

Let me tell you, this was the best goddamn fish salad I’ve ever had. No joke, this was incredible. I could easily have put down five or six more pieces of toast and salmon salad, but I decided 9:30 wasn’t the best time of night to be eating quite that much fish, mayonnaise, and fermented vegetables.

I recommend this brand if you’re willing to put in some work!

Looks good. I always ate the bones in canned fish but canned salmon sounds gross so I havent tried any with bones to know if they are crunchable

You can eat the bones, they’re very soft and packed with nutrients.

It is always the perfect time to eat that much fish, mayonnaise, and fermented vegetables!

The bones and spine I usually just crush with a fork and mix back into the salmon. They become entirely unnoticeable that way but provide a nice calcium boost.

  5. Used to make salmon cakes out of these (some bread crumbs, an egg, canned salmon cooked on the stove). The spines were my favorite, they’d add a little texture to the patty

I’ve never removed the bones from canned salmon, my mum taught me to just mash the bones into the salmon with a fork….lots of nutrients in the bones!

I have been buying Trader Joe’s canned salmon and it’s delish. No bones.

I love using bone in canned salmon to make salmon cakes. The bones are a tasty little crunch.

I am always looking for canned salmon that includes bones, and I have never seen this one at my Whole Foods! I will look for it now!
