I visited the newest bakery on the scene in Shreveport and the quality and quantity of selections in this sweet little shop surpassed my expectations.

The pastries at Figs Bakery and Cafe looked exquisitely made and tasted even better. I learned that everything is made from scratch at this artisan boulangerie beginning at 3 a.m. by the husband-and-wife team who own the bakery.

The lady standing in line beside me was apparently already a big fan of Figs Bakery, though it just opened last weekend. As I studied the pastries behind the glass, she remarked, “Everything is delicious — you can’t go wrong with any of it,” adding that she thought they had the best chocolate chip cookies. I tried one of the large, thin, and chewy cookies and it was silky and sweet.

I couldn’t get over what I thought were the most beautiful croissants I’ve ever seen, with an almost striped look. And it tasted fabulous as well – soft and airy with a slightly crispy flaky outside.

For breakfast, I ordered the blueberry danish (warmed up), which I literally savored and was disappointed when it was gone. The bread was soft and just the right slight amount of crispy on the outside, with a topping of blueberry cream cheese and fresh berries.

Other items in the bakery case included almond croissants, oatmeal cranberry white chocolate cookies, lemon passion fruit tarts, chocolate cherry cruffins, croissant swirls, chocolate croissants and raisin croissants.

Figs Bakery has specialty coffees too, which to me is the perfect complement to any pastry. Some ladies sitting next to me were enjoying cappuccinos.

Along the savory lines, the milk bread hot dog caught my eye with its interesting shape, and I’m guessing would be a fun treat for kids or any hot dog lover. My teen and husband tried it and said it was rich solid bread with good quality savory sausage.

There was also a good looking pizza focaccia and bacon and egg and turkey bacon and egg sandwiches on ciabatta bread.

They are still finalizing the menu, so available items may vary from day to day. The Facebook page lists breads to be offered as rustic French bread, ciabatta, baguette, and country sourdough.
