Hello fellow cookiers! I’ve received an extremely unique order for 360 camouflage-themed cookies, due at the end of February. I’m stumped on one of the designs and would love any thoughts or advice on how to pull this off and retain some semblance of sanity.

The client would like 1/3 of the order to depict Dazzle Ships: WWI ships decorated with “complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours interrupting and intersecting each other” to throw off the enemy and make them harder to target.

Basically I need to recreate an intentionally confusing and complex black and white design 120 times in cookie form. I’m planning to use a 5” x 3.2” rectangular cutter and a simple white background flood as a base.

I have a cookie projector so tracing is definitely doable, and coincidentally just placed an order for the Big Blue Edible Printer by Icing Images BUT it is tragically on back order and will not arrive until early March so it won’t help for this order.

My question for this lovely community is: does anybody have any idea how the heck I can pull this off?? Which ship angle/photo of the ones included do you think would be the most doable? Should I pipe the ships directly onto the cookie base, or make royal icing transfers? Should I pipe black & white icings, or do just a white blank ship and draw the design on with black edible marker?

I have just over 5 weeks until this order is due, so I have some time to plan and practice. Any thoughts or advice on how to do this in the least insanity-inducing way possible would be much appreciated!!

Seeing how the Dazzle ships can be many patterns, I would reach out to the client and ask if they could send you a picture of what they are looking for.

Have you considered doing the pattern as a background? Maybe on an octagonal cookie. And then do a sketchy outline of a small ship in the middle. That might give the effect without having to get too complex.

Hmmmm I definitely had to think about this one, but very fun. I think ship 3 would be easier to do because the lines are less straight and parallel compared to others!

If I was working on this, I would flood the base with white as you’ve mentioned, and then use the projector to trace the shape of the ship, including all the black lines.

From there, I would flood all the black lines first to dry and avoid bleeding, and then fill in the white. This works better for me because I have bad posture when I use the projector so I limit my use as much as possible.

Very interesting! If it were me, I would pipe and flood the ship in white and then do the black parts with edible marker. Ship 3 would be my go to because the big chunky sections seem easier to work with.

First, did they provide this images or you? I would ask for a reference if they didn’t send these.

I also assumed the cookie wouldn’t have a literal ship, but would have the confusing patterns as the decoration itself. Is that something you’ve considered or does it definitely need the ship itself?

I’d use a hexagon or non square or circular shape. The dazzle pattern is also used on not yet released cars when test driven to obscure the shape or features of the car. A square shape would be too easy to guess.

I’d also use the template frosting scraper method to quickly transfer the pattern. Would save a lot of time and then you can add something simpler on top for complexity and depth.
