I'm sorry if this is dumb, I have searched around this sub and elsewhere to find a similar type of scratch, one that seems to have penetrated the ceramic(?) coating enough to leave behind these flakes, but to no avail. Just trying to get help from people who might have experience.
I'm not sure the year/make/model of the crockpot but it's a typical crockpot, probably at least 15 years old, but used pretty lightly.
Anyways, has anyone seen this before? Should I give it a thorough soap/sponge cleaning, and it should be ok? Or should I replace the whole thing?

I would not use it if the coating flakes like that.
Just think about the question. I know you don’t like the answer but
It’s leaving behind glassy residue… Can I cook with it and eat it?
No. I’m sorry but I sure wouldn’t chance it.
I have this crockpot. How confident are you that that is actually the glaze coming off of the crock and not just burnt food residue? For it to be the black glaze coming off you should have a significant crack in the crock to the point you would not even be questioning the usability of it. The glaze on a crock is melted glass fused over the ceramic.
That’s strange. I’d expect the coating to be chipping rather than flaking off like you have there. Are you able to see any plain ceramic under where it scratched? Is it maybe possible that it’s a layer of burnt food that got stuck and didn’t come off completely in the wash?
Put some dishwasher liquid in it and soak it for a while. Scrub it out with a magic eraser. It might only be food residue.
How confident are you that the ceramic coating is scratched? Your pictures do not reveal the scratched area?
If you take the residue that’s shown on your finger and put it in a metal plate or container and burn it with regular fire such as a long handled Bic lighter for barbecues does it smoke?
If so it’s just burn food carbon and not glass.
If you subscribe the Crock-Pot coating with a green scrubby does the issue get worse? better? or stay the same?
Ceramicist and crockpot enthusiast here.
Crockpots are glazed ceramic. Underneath the black glaze is white clay that has been fired to such a high heat that the clay itself is vitrified (waterproof), as is the black glaze (essentially glass) on top.
If the black glaze has been scratched to the point that it is flaking off, that means the black dust in your hands is glass, which is absolutely not safe to eat. I would not trust it even after a thorough cleaning, as the glaze surface has been compromised and will continue to get worse (flake, crack, break). You should be able to see a distinct physical crack in the glaze. I wouldn’t recommend trying to feel for it, bc broken glass and all.
That being said, it is MUCH more likely that what is on your hand is old dried up burnt food. Glazes are tough and strong. Minor scuffs and scratches are totally normal, do not affect the usability, and do NOT result in flakes of glass coming off.
Are you not supposed to wash by hand? That is what I always thought. Just asking.
I would never put mine in the dishwasher
Do you have any worse picture?
Why would you put that in the dishwasher? It literally takes 3 minutes to clean.
I’ve never heard of this happening…not sure it’s what you think happened that actually happened.
