It might not have been open for ling, but a small Italian restaurant in Gateshead is already proving a big hit. And it’s already racked up its fair share of 5 star reviews in a matter of weeks.

If you’ve been paying attention to ChronicleLive over the last 12 months you’ll know we’ve written quite a lot about the many Italian restaurants we have on our patch. And who can blame us? As with so many greats ones, whether they’re chains or independent local legends, they deserve to be shouted about.

At the end of last summer, you had your say on the best Italian in the North East, with hundreds of votes cast before Michelangelo’s in Ryton was crowned champion. And now it’s another Italian in Gateshead that’s impressing as, following its opening in Low Fell towards the end of 2025, ZaNapoli is already getting plenty of positive feedback.

Announcing its imminent arrival to an area packed with some brilliant hidden gems, Za Napoli declared ‘real Italian pizza is coming to Gateshead’ with a message on its website reading: ‘ZaNapoli was created from a simple belief: the best food and drink come from passion, fire, and the finest ingredients.’

Well, just a few weeks into trading, it certainly seems like ZaNapoli are delivering on their promise, as, giving feedback on Facebook after their meal there, one customer claimed they’d just had ‘the best pizza in Gateshead’ as they added: ‘Excellent meal today. Warm, friendly atmosphere. Good service.’ You don’t have to look very far at all to find more glowing reviews of ZaNapoli either, with a second reading: ‘Just been this evening. This pizza was the best I’ve had in years. Well priced, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Will definitely be returning.’

ZaNapoli opened its doors on Kells Lane on December 8 and has already achieved a perfect score of 5/5 on Google, with a glowing endorsement from one diner who enthused: ‘I absolutely loved the pizzas here! The garlic bread focaccia pizza was incredibly delicious, and the calzone dessert filled with Nutella and mascarpone was just amazing. The place itself is cozy, welcoming, and has such a great vibe.’
