I did a solo dinner at Schwa last weekend. I was very excited about it, in no small part because Oriole and Cariño are some of my favourite meals and both chefs cooked there at some point. I walked in knowing it wasn’t a quintessential fine dining experience but I don’t think I fully understood that it would be like a house party with dinner being served. The food is pretty good – but some of the flavors felt stale and per their Instagram there hasn’t been a lot of menu change. both the dessert courses fell flat against the build up from the savoury courses. i also expected more innovation and creativity in terms of flavors, textures, and the like from a place that seems to be pushing the envelope in all other ways.

My favourite bites were definitely 1) ravioli shot which leans heavily on truffle 2) trout with lychee 3)rutabaga crepes with butter and caviar 4)cheese course with fenugreek, canale, and chocolate and mushrooms. Least favourite bites were 1) bubblegum taffy with plum soda 2) cornbread and 3) wagyu bc of inconsistent cook and some were definitely too cooked.
