Opened this for my birthday. Some dried cherry/ fruit still hanging around but overall really savory and complex. Cured meat, leather, very mild white pepper, and was surprised by slight violety floral notes — possibly viognier at work? The color was light and not too brickish at all, I had a hard time believing this was 30 years old. I would have thought this was a much younger burgundy by the looks.

On the palate, very pleased how much acid was here holding this wine together. Tannins are completely resolved and very silky/ mellow, which in combination with the acid led to a really lovely body and texture. This wine was probably a little past peak as it faded in the glass, but the lovely body meant it drank nicely through the evening.

I’ll always take a chance when I see random old wines at my local wine shop. The cork was impeccable. For $125, this made a great birth year dinner wine. Served with salmon crudo, prime tomahawks, hasselback potatoes, and a simple French bistro salad.

Gerin is always lovely! Champin used to be one of the best Cote Rotie values but prices keep rising. Great to hear this was so good with so much age. Would love to age their Vialliere or Grandes Places one day…
