I tried Yummi Express in Beverly, located at 99th and Vincennes, as it was recommended as an alternative to The Halal Guys' chicken/gyro over rice platter. I am a big fan of The Halal Guys and regularly order the chicken platter with falafel balls for lunch.

I ordered a crispy chicken rice bowl and fries (not pictured). Overall, I enjoyed the rice bowl; the portion size was good value for money at $7.99. I had it for lunch and had some leftovers for dinner, but I also had fries. Your mileage may vary on how far the rice bowl goes, depending on your level of hunger.

The chicken was crispy, and the breading was not too thick. The side salad vegetables were fresh and crispy, not soggy. But I was not a huge fan of the ranch sauce over the chicken and prefer the tazziki white sauce from Halal Guys. They use a short-grain rice that was seasoned, good, but not great. I enjoy the basmati rice (long-grain) with saffron used by Halal Guys than the short-grain rice used by Yummi Express. Overall, Yummi Express has a solid rice bowl, but it does not come close to Halal Guy's chicken platter. If you keep an open mind and accept that Yummi Express is not trying to be Halal Guys, you won't be disappointed. If you're in the neighborhood and have a craving for a rice bowl, give them a shot.

You can order the rice bowl with chicken (crispy or grilled), gyro meat, or a mixed rice bowl (gyro + chicken). All rice bowls come with your protein of choice over rice, ranch sauce, and a side salad. The side salad comes with lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes. However, unlike Halal Guys, their rice bowls do not come with pita. They do not sell falafel balls or pita, but it is not a deal breaker, and I understand that Yumni Express is not Halal Guys.
