Asked the chef to surprise me, and I'm not sure what this fish is.

It was cut thick, almost had the texture of white meat, but was really delicious.

This is escolar. It’s a very delicious fish, but should only be eaten in moderation.

A lot of people are going to tell you about the effects of eating too much of it, but keep in mind that it’s perfectly safe in the quantity seen in your photo, and even in large quantities the unpleasant effects are very temporary.

Poopfish! I sent it back when it arrived in my sashimi. Gross.

It is escalar like stated above, also called white tuna. The negative side effects when consuming too much happen. Because oils and fat in the fish cannot be digested by our body and will pass through you if you have too much of it. Like 3 or 4 times the amount shown, you can have oily discharge.

As much as I enjoy a couple of pieces of white tuna, I’d be pretty disappointed if this what what my sushi chef decided to surprise me with

I enjoy escolar. I didn’t realize and I never noticed the negative side effects. But now I know to limit it to about 2 pieces at a time.

The surprise comes after you leave, lol

It’s banned in Japan, Italy, Hong Kong and New Zealand. It’s banned because the wax esters cause ass juice to leak from your butthole.

I love white tuna! I usually have 2-4 pieces of it when I go out to all you can eat sushi. I’ve never experienced any of these negative side effects people are talking about, and I’ve had it probably at least a dozen times

I’ve only had this served to me once but I really enjoyed it and experienced no negative effects.

You would need to eat like 6-8 oz of escolar to feel the effects this amount is perfectly safe

Dont eat that. Its pretty much a cheap low quality fish that mimics the taste of a high quality one. You wouldn’t find in any tradition Japanese restaurant serving this. If a restaurant is serving this Id think twice about their overall quality and bet they are not Japanese owned.

People are such haters. I personally love escolar. Idgaf if it’s cheap fish or whatever, it tastes good. Catch me ordering escolar and Otoro in the same meal. Gasp!

It is a trash fish. If I saw a restaurant serving it I would not come back. I

Escolar, i personally like the fish grilled. Its a bit unremarkable as shimi but not bad

Probably Chinese owned establishment. The carrot julienne, the sashimi cut, the wasabi squirt from a pastry tipped bag 🫠

  16. This post is the first I’ve heard of the supposed side effects of escolar. I’ve eaten it in small amounts, many times, and I’ve never noticed “side effects”. And it tastes good.

Compared to other big side effects from other delicious food, the lack of side effects from eating a small amount sounds like a big win.

    Examples, in large amounts:
    * Garlic and onion makes you fart.
    * Spicy food, especially with tomatoes, can give you heartburn.
    * Very spicy food can breakdown some stomach lining, giving… Indigestion, I think it’s called.

But small amounts of those things are delicious. Sounds the same to me.

Too those that say it’s a trash fish: do you mean the same way a lobster was considered trash (only fit for prisoners), back in the day?
