Pizza is my desert island food. If I had to be stranded in a remote location with only one kind of food indefinitely, I’d choose a cheesy, saucy pie with lots of toppings. When I want a quick, easy dinner, I hop online and place a delivery pizza order. When my husband asks me where I want to go for dinner on date night, I sheepishly suggest our local pizza joint. When my family went on a guided tour across Italy last year, my favorite part wasn’t touring the Colosseum or riding a gondola through Venice: It was a pizza tasting we attended at an absolutely delightful Italian pizzeria.

But until recently, I’ve always seen bake-at-home, store-bought pizzas as a quick fix for those times when I’m craving pizza but short on time. Frozen pizzas are OK, of course, but they’re not something that gives me pleasure as I take a bite. These ready-made pizzas often lack enough cheese, have a skimpy amount of toppings, and never taste quite as crisp, flavorful, or fresh as a restaurant or homemade pizza.

However, a recent Reddit thread inspired me to try a new-to-me type of frozen pizza that they claim tastes just like a restaurant. And you’ll find it at Walmart.

What Makes Walmart’s Bettergoods Frozen Pizza So Good, According to RedditAllrecipes / Walmart

In the r/FrozenDinners subreddit, one Redditor described Walmart’s Bettergoods frozen pizzas as, “some of the best frozen pizzas [they’ve] ever had,” calling the pies “fantastic” with an “amazing crust.” Another Redditor said the pizzas were, “better than takeout, not even lying,” and someone else deemed the pies a, “respectable pizza,” describing Bettergoods as, “Walmart’s upgraded house brand.”

Walmart launched its Bettergoods line in April 2024. The in-house brand includes everything from shishito pepper potato chips to jalapeño limeade, and it boasts multiple varieties of frozen pizza. The brand’s wood-fired pizzas include delightful flavor combos, like mushroom and truffle or rosemary and garlic chicken. They also come in regular and ultra-thin crusts, as well as gluten-free varieties.

My Honest Review of Walmart’s Bettergoods Frozen Pizza

As a pizza devotee, I was eager to try the Bettergoods pizzas with my family. I kept things simple, purchasing the Wood-Fired Pepperoni Bacon Pizza and Italian Wood-Fired Five Cheese Pizza, both of which cost just $6.92 each. According to the boxes, there’s a difference between Italian wood-fired and just wood-fired pizza. Our five-cheese pizza, which had a mascarpone cheese sauce and plenty of cheese on top, was fired in a lava-stone, wood-fire oven while our wood-fired, meat-topped pizza only said it was wood-fired, presumably not in an Italian lava-stone oven.

My husband tossed both pizzas into our oven according to the package instructions. Both were ready in about 15 minutes and after he sliced them up, my entire family dug in. My teenage son, a picky eater who loves pizza, but only certain kinds, exclaimed, “Wow!” when he took his first bite. My teenage daughter popped her head out of her room to grab a slice and later asked where we had ordered our pizza from, because “it was really good.” She was shocked to learn the two pizzas cost me less than $15 at Walmart.

My husband, who often handles firing our homemade pizzas in our outdoor pizza oven, was surprised at how crunchy and well-cooked both crusts were. “I knew as soon as I started cutting them with the pizza cutter that they were going to be really good,” he said, “just from how light and crispy the crust was.”

But did Walmart’s Bettergoods frozen pizzas meet my exacting standards? Yes, they did. Both the five-cheese variety and the pepperoni-and-bacon variety were incredibly delicious, with tons of melty cheese, flavorful sauce and toppings, and crusts that tasted more like restaurant-style, wood-fired pizza than any other frozen pizza I’ve ever had. I loved the brand so much, in fact, that I’ve already picked up a few more to serve my family the next time we’re pressed for time on a weeknight, but still want to sit down for dinner together.

Turns out those Redditors are absolutely correct. Walmart’s Bettergoods frozen pizzas are impressively good, and are absolutely worth adding to your cart the next time you’re shopping at Walmart.
