What is everyone’s thoughts on these type of rolls?
These are what my friends ordered. I didn't try any because I ordered sushi and handrolls and prefer the more fresh raw stuff. These are deep fried Cali rolls and some other stuff with fried fillings

Honestly neither a fan of fried rolls nor of sauce on my sushi that I didn’t put there myself …

We’ve got a Sake Maki (which is fresh and tasty) and some fried stuff. I prefer fresh to fried, but it probably tasted great nonetheless.

I love it all.

This is why I don’t go to sushi with friends.

I think simpler is generally better for maki. The plain salmon one looks to be the best

If its what they like let them eat doesn’t matter what other ppl think you eat what you like they can too

We all started somewhere. Back when I started eating sushi in my early 20’s, I was hooked on your typical spicy tuna/salmon, spider roll, rainbow roll, and was in love with a local spot that essentially had a spicy crab and tempura flake roll topped with 4 different types of tobiko (black, green, yellow, red)
Granted, rolls nowadays are a LOT more outlandish than what specialty rolls were 20 years ago, but its all relative to those who are new to sushi now.
With all that being said – if someone orders something like that, sometimes i’ll try a bite just because they are pretty tasty (some are too overkill) but I’d never order anything like that for myself. I’ve been so sick of sushi in my past because of the overkill rolls i was eating. Now? I can eat sushi 2x a week without a doubt because 95% of what I eat is nigiri and sometimes a very basic roll.

“It’s not traditional sushi!!”
Ok, sure. Valid point.
“It tastes like shit.”
This is where y’all go too far. This kind of “sushi” absolutely slaps flavor-wise. It’s its own thing.
slatchaw
There good, and typically cheap and easy for people at the entry level. I hate!! when they grind up the fish and put it in the rolls mixed with mayo however. I also think the crab stick “salad” is a weak addition to add money

The occasional fried one like tempura prawn maki is good but I want most of my sushi non fried. Maybe some aburi. Some cooked eel. But mostly the raw stuff is best. Not a big fan of pickled but lightly pickled is OK.
vae_grim
It’s fine. Not my favorite, but I wouldn’t refuse a bite or two!
AnustartIbluemyself
For lunch if I’m picking it up a a quick service spot or supermarket, perfectly fine if it’s priced accordingly.
Would not be something I order when out to eat.
SweetxKiss
I’m Japanese… I will eat any sushi. Sashimi, maki, chirashi… I don’t care if you put sauce, deep fry it, put non-traditional items… I appreciate the creativity of Western sushi makers!

Bro just out there judging other peoples food, lol

I wouldn’t order them but if they’re there I’ll try them. Would I like them? Probably not.

i would devour this

I’m not a fan. I like sushi for the clean flavors. I’d prefer a steak over an overly complex amalgamation of vaguely Japanese ingredients.

i dont personally like specialty rolls bc i prefer maki (i can’t do too many different textures) but they always look so delicious

Looks good to me

I personally like mine more on the traditional side, and without the garbage mayo based sauce on it. The only thing there I would eat is the salmon hosomaki.
But if you like the other stuff, more power to you. Eat what you like.

I like the plain salmon the best. I like sauce on some stuff, like eel or salmon skin. I generally avoid the tempura fried stuff, or the crunchy spicy, because sometimes it just tastes like fryer oil.
Lost_my_password1
Not my personal first choice but if it’s there I’ll definitely try a few.

I love anything with salmon! But I do agree with the comment saying simple is best

I would eat it.

I like them, I won’t get them a lot and maybe only one when I do because I also prefer raw stuff, but they’re solid.
A lot of what you’ll find in the newer rolls with a lot of sauce and cooked stuff is that they have really good flavor but the subtle flavors of a nice simple rice fish and seaweed roll can get drown out. Not entirely erased as you can still taste them but they become a very small part of the flavor palette so I think opinions on these will vary based on just that, if someone wants a wider flavor palette that loses some of the core flavor or a strong core flavor but not as much variety in flavor.

They’re good. It’s not traditional but people should eat what they like. It’s the same way i feel about Poke.

The first place I ever saw an egregious amount of mayo on sushi was a place in Nagoya. All of my Japanese friends went nuts for it, it was pretty darn good but I also tend to like simpler styles that emphasize the fish more than anything. Neither is wrong though of course

All kinds of sushi are delicious!

Hope I never have to eat with someone who’s weird enough to
-harbour a belief that some of the sushi sold at a sushi restaurant isn’t sushi somehow
-get judgmental over whether my sushi counts as sushi
-publicly leans over and takes a picture of my food
-posts said picture online to see if other people think my food choice sucks or not
Re: my personal opinion on this, its sushi the whole way up, I’ve had aburi and fried rolls at Michelin restaurants, I think believing non raw sushi “doesn’t count” as sushi just indicates you think there’s something adventurous or impressive or exotic about eating sushi when its just regular food
shadowtheimpure
You wrap it with rice and nori, I’ll destroy it. Deep fried, baked, broiled, I do not care.
