Shime saba is definitely polarizing, but it’s one of my favorites when it’s well prepared.

I love mackerel to the point where I have a tattoo of a mackerel on my ribs!
I love grilled mackerel, seared mackerel, smoked mackerel, but I have never liked any shime saba I have tried.
It might be freshness, because they really don’t keep well. When I go fishing, theyre usually frozen within 2 hours of being caught.
I bought a little grill to fit on my boat and have had the privilege of cooking mackerel within literally a minute of ot being caught. It is absolutely sublime but so dependent on freshness.

I love the oiliness of mackerel. It just coats your mouth in such a nice way. I’ll always order a couple mackerel nigiri if it’s on the menu.

Mackerel, when fresh and properly prepped, is awesome 🥰 I actually like butchering mackerel, its innards have this sweet and savory smell to them. Quick brining mackerel filets in sugar, salt, and rice vinegar make them perfect for various sushi, or for pan frying and grilling. So yes, a hearty like from me for mackerel sushi.

It is in my top 3! Although there are different types…my favorite is the sawara, with aji close behind but that’s not *technically* a mackerel, it’s just called that.

I can’t do it. Personally. And I love most sushi. Not California rolls…smdh
I can do like one nigiri but it’s too fishy tasting for any more for me.
