Trump has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and Champagne in response to Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to join his newly established “Board of Peace”.
In a statement to reporters, Trump said: “I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes and he’ll join.”
The board, according to Trump, has been tasked with “providing strategic oversight, mobilizing international resources and ensuring accountability” in Gaza.
It has been self-described by the president as “the greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled at any time, any place.”
On the proposed 200% tariffs, France’s minister of agriculture, Annie Genevard, described Trump’s comments as “blackmail”.
Speaking to a French TV station, Genevard added: “It’s shocking because it’s brutal, it’s done to force compliance.”
Meanwhile, a statement from Macron’s office noted that the board “goes beyond the framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be called into question.”
This marks the second time Trump has threatened a 200% tariff on alcoholic beverages from Europe.
In March 2025, the president likewise said that he would impose a 200% tariff on all alcohol from the EU, via a statement on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
