After 27 years, downtown Petaluma’s “hidden gem,” Water Street Bistro, has announced it will close its doors permanently on Feb. 6.

“This has been a very hard decision to make,” said owner Stephanie Rastetter in a statement posted Thursday on the cozy riverside restaurant’s Facebook page.

Though no specific reason was given for the closure, Rastetter said that “Many factors came into play, but I believe the time is right. How fortunate I was to get the opportunity to fulfill my dream of having my own restaurant after years in the industry – but there are still more dreams, and so I have decided it is time for the next chapter.”

Since its opening in 1999, the often-packed bistro has become known for its French-inspired comfort food, bakery items and soups, with particular praise awarded to its staple dishes such as a delicious duck confit and a variety of quiches.

Describing her customers and staff as “family,” Rastetter – an early pioneer of the Bay Area farm-to-table food scene who once cooked for culinary legend Daniel Patterson at the internationally renowned Babette’s in Sonoma – thanked the community of Petaluma for supporting her cafe for nearly three decades.

“All of the fantastic memories and meals which we have shared will always stay close to my heart,” she said, adding, “I am forever grateful to my family. I look forward to having more time to spend with them in the coming years.”

Confirming that Water Street Bistro’s final day of service will be Friday, Feb. 6, the announcement encouraged those with gift certificates to drop by between now and then to use the cards before the restaurant closes for good at the end of that day.

“I know there will be some tearful goodbyes,” Rastetter said. “At least on my part.”

Water Street Bistro is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, closed Sunday-Tuesday. 100 Petaluma Blvd. North, Petaluma, 707-763-9563, waterstreetbistropetaluma.com.
