I love the type of meal that is a big platter with a bunch of different smaller components on it. The best example of this is probably thali, I have enjoyed an Indian one at Pongal Restaurant and Nepalese versions at Faarzi and Nepali Baancha Gar. The set menu at Kisa also falls into this category. The Malaysian version of this seems to be nasi lemak, which I enjoyed at Good Taste in Elmhurst, and last night I had another great iteration, nasi bungkus at the Indonesian restaurant Sumatera. Can you recommend any additional meals which fall into same category?

I think you’ll love lamprais (rice, meat, and a bunch of other stuff served in a banana leaf similar to your picture here) or a Rice and Curry dish from one of the Sri Lankan restaurants in Staten Island. A couple of spots you could try are Randiwa and New Asha. There’s also Sigiri over in 1st Avenue, though I’ve never tried that. Alternatively, you could go to Lakruwana for a buffet-style setting.

Any combination plate, whether meat or veggie, at an Ethiopian restaurant such as Awash. Salatim at Laser Wolf.

Aliada is a Greek/Cypriot restaurant in Astoria that does meat and fish mezedes platters (minimum 2 people). Their food is really good

Java in Park Slope does Rijstafel, which is a Dutch-Indonesian meal like this.

How about a PuPu Platter? Blue Ribbon Brasserie has the fancy version, but a decent amount (less so nowadays) of Chinese restaurants will have them.

What about a bar appetizer platter of wings, mozzarella sticks, etc? Plentiful.

Food websites like Eater and the Infatuation need to have “Big plate with a bunch of different stuff on it” as a search category.

Lali guras in jackson heights makes my favorite thali.

  12. If you Google “Thali”, that’s the Indian term for a big plate of lots of different stuff.

Where is the first one btw, is it called thali? I can’t seem to find it on google maps

This is just Asian food most of the time lol. A bento is the classic example, or a bibimbap. In Taiwan most traditional places come with an option to order xiaotsai which means “little dishes”

Awang Kitchen, they’ve got their own version of nasi bungkus too

Vatan in Murray hill area has awesome thali

For sure ethiopian injera. Also idk if this necessarily fits the bill, but korean bibimbap is basically stone pot rice with a whole bunch of different toppings & the rice is sooo good & crispy on the bottom

Turkish breakfast, 100%. Particularly one labeled as “supreme”

  19. These platters are called “thali” in Indian cuisine. Look at thali on the menu across restaurants serving Indian food from all corners of the country.

“Dashi Okume” in Williamsburg (50 Norman Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222) has a small dining section with teishoku sets. Comes with a grilled fish, rice, some side dishes, and miso soup and tea. All excellent. The store specializes in selling dashi broth/stock ingredients.
