Northern California mussels harvested at low tide. Steamed in wine, butter, leeks and garlic with crusty bread on the side. Simple and delicious. They were way meatier than grocery store PEI mussels. Beautiful orange flesh. Will do again 🙂

    Orange mussels are female.

Absolutely love foraging for mussles. They make the tastiest dinner with friends!

It’s really nice seeing non-overcooked mussels.

    What a treat!

Did you contact the CDPH Biotoxin hotline first? I assume you also had a valid fishing license.

    Bottom-dwelling filter feeders. Blech.

You know what they eat, right?

Howd you get the sand out? I did this once and they had a lot of crunch

    Nice california mussels.

I generally never pull them from rocks in the middle of sandy beaches since they can be full of annoying sand then, but if it worked out for you thats great. I have found that carefully steaming them in a single layer helps any sand fall into the pot and out of the mussels.
