Wanting to get my husband a grill for his 30th birthday… not really able to go over $350 total. My original plan was to go for a new 22 inch Weber Master-Touch in Deep Ocean Blue, but found this option on Marketplace locally for $100, comes with the cover. Awaiting response on if this is 22 or 26 inch. It is just the two of us, so not really thinking size is an issue?
I have two main questions… first, is this a good deal/does it look to be in good condition? I know almost nothing about grills, but we bought our first home and want to get something that will be loved for a long time! Second, would you be disappointed getting a used grill for a gift? This option would allow me to get extras, such as Chimney Starter, new stainless steel grates, steaks, etc.
Appreciate thoughts on this!
Sincerely,
A good gifter, but a bit out of my element.

Looks like its in good condition and with the cover is a decent/standard deal for used. All of my grills have been purchased used so I personally wouldn’t mind being gifted a used one from my wife. It would be different from a friend. Just my opinion.
That’s a 22 inch. Good deal
I believe based upon the bottom/wheel rack/grate this is a 22”.
I’d be disappointed in getting a used grill as a gift. But that’s just me. If it’s going to be something that will be used for a very long time, a few extra bucks over your budget won’t be remembered in 20 or so years. But I don’t know your budget constraints. And not everyone is like me in this regard. So no wrong answers here. Ultimately, you know your husband better than we do. Would he care about getting a used grill? I think that’s the most important question, and only you can answer it.
Otherwise it looks like it’s in decent shape, but the pictures aren’t showing that much detail here.
That’s definitely the 22 inch.
Used vs new matters extremely little with things like this as long as it’s in good condition. It’s a simple enough contraption that it doesn’t wear out with use like a car, it just takes abuse from neglect if not cleaned and covered properly.
It looks good and that’s a great grill.
Looks to be in good shape, and no, I would not be disappointed in getting a used grill for a birthday gift. Gives you SO the chance to use it, okay around, experiment and then, if they decide to, they can upgrade. Good gift!!!
I’d be pumped you even knew what I wanted! Used doesn’t matter, this example is in good shape and with the cover for $100 is a steal. Just give it a good scrub down and he’ll be using it for many tasty cooks.
If getting extras I’d get him a chimney, some charcoal baskets, and a vortex. Those should cover most smoking needs/wants.
It’s a 22in master touch. Look up grill bricks and how to use them. Pretty easy, you can have those grates looking new… or buy them for your husband so he can clean them. That’s a 60$ to 80$ dollar grate alone. The center comes out and the sides open up. Don’t get new grates unless husband wants them. Those can be made to look lightly used to brand new again. If it was me and I was married and my wife got me a used but still in good shape grill with all the goodies I would be very happy. That saves money for a Charcoal chimney starter, charcoal baskets for 22in Weber grill(get Weber brand) good tongs, burger flipper, thermometer, sauces, seasonings, grill apron, grill scraper and extra charcoal and meat for the first few cooks. If you buy a 22in master touch new you will be getting a grill(299 to 275$ new) have to buy a chimney (15-20$) and that leaves room for some decent tongs and possibly a burger flipper.
Looks like a great deal, could maybe even haggle depending on the condition when you get there. I would recommend getting some accessories or upgrades with the money you saved. Might need new grates already but upgrading them might be nice, you can look for higher quality stainless steel or cast iron grates. Other things like a vortex (make sure you have a removable center grill grate), a chimney starter if you don’t have one, heat gloves, charcoal rake, quality brush, are all good options to add some “new” to the “used”
First off I would offer 70-80. Thats just me. I’ve seen them go for 50. Second you dont need stainless steel grates. Just add more charcoal then need on the first burn and let it everything burn off. Scrape and cook away.
Maybe a rotisserie kit? Some are double use as a pizza oven kinda. A side table that hooks onto it. A bunch on Amazon. Yea I wouldn’t mind a use grill myself. After using it a few times they all look the same.🤣🤣🤣. Happy grilling.
Clean it up a bit and you are in business. This is a used Weber in great condition. $100 is a steal and if cared for will last a lifetime. Your husband chose well. Pick him up some lump, a chimney starter and some utensils, maybe some peach paper/foil or whatever
I’d be stoked to get this as a gift used or not. Its the thought behind it that matters.
It’s the perfect gift. Short of dents they don’t wear out. Replace the grate for $35 if you want, quick clean is $20. Both will make it literally as good as new.
But doing neither is still just as good. I’m partial to my kettle though.
This is a great deal, and I’d be ecstatic with it. As others have said, used vs new doesn’t matter too much with the actual grill. I’d put the additional funds to bigger ticket items where used vs new does make an impact on functionality. Think of things like a new wireless thermometer, new utensils, slow n sear etc.
>…so not really thinking size is an issue?
Uh huh. We’ve all heard that line before. Well, er, maybe most of you have. 😬
Seriously though, the size of the grill doesn’t matter until it does. If you’re ever wanting to host a bbq for friends, family, a neighborhood soirée, or simply decide the food coming off of it is so good that you want to do extra every time you cook so you can vacuum pack and freeze some for future use when time doesn’t permit a fresh cook, then you are going to appreciate the extra real estate that the 26 offers.
You or your spouse may just decide to expand what you’re wanting to put on the grates, such toss a 19#+ brisket on, or a couple of pork butts plus some appetizer wings, plus a couple of sausages, and if so then you will be grateful for the larger model.
Looks like it’s in good shape, but this is definitely a question only you can answer. But if you cleaned it up and added some accessories, a new grill grate, and his choice of meat, it’d be hard to be upset. You could also just buy the new grill itself and stay under $350 pretty easily.
It’s a good deal but you should gauge if your husband likes to clean and restore things. Most dudes won’t bother as it’s the thought that counts. $100 for a nice grill is a sweet deal
I would prefer a new grill as a gift. Especially for a new home. Then I would be excited to go out and get all the accessories myself. But if you are strapped for cash. Then I would be happy with a used one.
First time you use a grill it is considered “used”.
As long as the used grill works as well as a new one, should not be a issue
If your husband is the type of person that likes to save money, he’d be happier with a used one. I’m the same, a new one is too much and arguably more hassle than getting a used one.
For under $100 get him a new Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal grill if its only two of you. Add compact Weber chimney, compact grill tools (Tongs and spatula) and some charcoal briquets to get started. Much better filling to receive a new in the box item as a gift. You will be able to take it with you to picnics as well. Once he learn how to cook on it, he will be able to get a larger used grill for some really big meals latter on. That would be a mutually planed home improvement purchase, not a “house warming” B-Day gift.
I wouldn’t snub a used, good condition MasterTouch. If he does, he’s crazy.
Add my vote: Go for it! IMO much better to get a nice used one for $100 than not get a new one for $300 due to budget. And IAC you can spend the $200 for meat, charcoal, chimney starter etc. Add a gift card for that stuff and happy hubby can shop for what he wants.
Aside from that, There are two of us and I get a lot of use out of our 26. Spatchcock 16lb turkey for Thanksgiving. It will hold 3 racks of back ribs or two full racks of spares. I can smoke 2 pork butts and tuck a bunch of bratwurst around the bigger stuff that needs more time. Then use the Food Saver to package for the freezer.
Great price and it looks to be in great shape! As others have said just a little cleaning and it’ll be good as new (literally).
Of the extras you mention, for me the chimney starter is the best tool I own. I’d definitely get one to add but I’m willing to bet the steel grates are just fine under a little grease and such.
This is a great gift.
Good to go
GREAT GIFT!
For birthday present I’d be stoked. Find out you paid only $100, I’d have my mind blown. Lucky person getting such a nice grill for the price!
Countless guys and probably a few girls have been “Waiting for a girl like you”. Homage to Foreigner.
Your husband’s a very lucky man. You provided your man with a 22″ Weber charcoal grill albeit a tad bit used on his birthday, and saved him a bunch of money in the process. That’s almost as good as sex. With the $$ you’ve saved, plan on adding a chimney, a stainless steel grill rack with a removable center, and a vortex. You, my dear, are a keeper!!! I imagine he must know that by now. Happy grilling & smoking. Yes, you can smoke meat etc on a Weber charcoal grill. One last thing, you might want to get him is an SnS charcoal basket deluxe with a water tank for low and slow cooks. All the best for you both.
Me personally I wouldn’t mind at all if I got a used gift. Its the thought that counts. I would snag that and grab a few upgrades. All my grills have been 2nd hand and ive saved a ton of money because of it that way. I would just give it a good clean. Buy a chimney and some baskets and buy that man a nice steak.
What kind of guy is he? I would be stoked about a used charcoal grill, and extra cash for accessories. Throw new grate’s in it maybe if you want it to look nice.
This will make a superb gift 🙂 Read all of the great comments and something that hasn’t been mentioned are the air vents at the bottom of the kettle. I am most likely wrong as I haven’t grilled with these newer models but I would like to see a picture of what the bottom of the kettle looks like, the area around the air vents. I have found this area to be most prone to damage on used kettle grills. If you are going in person and on inspection, the metal work looks solid, meaning no wear or damage, $100 is fair value. If there is a bit of wear-and-tear, there could be room to negotiate. Love the idea of investing the savings into accessories! The great thing about Weber brand is there are lots of them. If I was your loved one, perhaps let them decide on a few accessories of their own choosing. Gift card could be nice if such things exist. Would also imagine the current owner may have a few accessories they’d be willing to part with. Other than that, agree on the charcoal chimney and lump charcoal – armed with these, you’re gift will be well celebrated!
Used is fine. Just buy new grate or add a ton of coal to sanitize and burn everything before using
I got a used Webber Kettle for Xmas and didn’t think twice. Didn’t even know I wanted one until those first wings came off with amazing smoked flavor
Used? No. Seasoned.
I have a Weber kettle my mate gave me and was made in 1986. Also have a spit attachment for it, done some of my best cooking on it. Looks a bit ugly but I love the shit out of it.
You’re on the right track in your circumstances and that looks like a nice 22″ WM-T for $100. Just needs a good de-greasing that should shine it up nicely. You’re research on extras are spot on! Look for #304 SS grate. A couple of rib-eyes would make a wonderful birthday dinner for two! Slide your story into the conversation with the seller and maybe you’ll be blessed with another $20 off! 🙂
Also, there have been posts here about clearance deals at some Lowe’s. On pre-built models, look for any defect and point it out as you may get additional discounts as I did.
I’d be more than happy to buy a used grill for myself but as a present I would purchase the new grill for him. Unboxing and putting together his brand new grill will be a core memory for him. He will feel like a kid again.
