We had a very pleasant tasting at Promontory. I went in expecting big over ripe cabernet given its hype but it was pleasantly restrained, very well balanced, and quite precise. Reminded me of a Chateaux Margaux I once had. It punched at that level. Lots of herbaceous notes and some pencil led on top of a core of dark fruit. Sorry, terrible notes. I was trying to be a good host.
We tried the 2017, the 2010, and the 2023 out of barrel. This is all from memory but the 2010 was notably more open and complex, and the 2023 should be a banger. Brilliant structure and already good polish.
I'm curious what people thought of the 2022 out of barrel when they tried it last year? It's not a great vintage but I think promontory might have pulled it off?
Obviously the issue with this winery is the prices, not the quality.

i need to visit this place. their instagram makes it looks otherworldy. fun fact, this vineyard used to be called Lone Canyon and was made by a winery called Ladera. you can occasionally find them on auction sites.
It’s amazing.
If you don’t mind me asking, what do they charge for a tasting?
Was just there a month or so ago. Was very surprised by the barrel tasting and like you said it best, it’s restraint.
It might have been the champagne taking but I joined the club and took some home.
Did you walk away with anything?
We had 18 penultimate then the 17 and 12 promontory plus barrel and Dom tasting. The 12 was really in a good spot that I could have finished the day with just that
