Massive flames destroyed the winery and event space just months after its opening, but thankfully, no one was inside.

HERMANN, Mo. — Wenwood Bay Winery and Restaurant was destroyed when its building caught fire early Sunday morning in Hermann.

The Owensville Fire Protection District reported that firefighters arrived at the two-story, 15,000-square-foot building at 2441 State Highway K around 1:20 a.m. Sunday to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Harsh weather conditions and the distance to the nearest reliable fire hydrant prompted authorities to upgrade the fire to a fourth alarm. Fire crews from multiple agencies used portable tanks and hand lines to combat the blaze from both the front and back of the building.

The blaze was brought under control by about 4 a.m., and crews remained on the scene until almost 7 a.m., the fire protection district said.

The building at Wenwood Bay Winery was considered a total loss, but fortunately, no one was inside at the time of the fire, according to the Owensville Fire Protection District.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause.

According to the Wenwood Bay Winery Facebook page, the winery and event space had its grand opening back in August, and on Owensville Fire’s Facebook post about the tragic loss, multiple people commented that they had attended a murder-mystery dinner at the venue the night before the fire.
