Dos anyone know what this is and are they edible?

  1. Inconsistent watering. They dried, then absorbed water too quickly so they split.  They are safe to eat.

    Carrots split primarily because they are not getting enough water…then all of a sudden getting lots of water. Excessive nitrogen can also be a contributing factor. But it’s usually not enough followed by too much water.

    Compost? I know you’ll get super hairy carrots if you give them compost.

    Those are some Grade-A Uggos. They’re safe to eat. You only see decent-looking carrots in the grocery store, but a lot of them are ugly and never make it to the produce stand. These look like they got underwatered, then overwatered to compensate. Just make sure you’re keeping the soil moist and well tilled; that’s the key to good-looking carrots.
