You can plant them, and they will grow more onion tops, but they will not grown more onions (bulbs). You might get them to stay alive log enough to go to seed, and then you could save the seed to plant to grow more onions.

Really, it’s probably best to just throw them in the compost and buy onions seeds or sets for your next growing season.

Maybe you can plant them…. But if you do, they will grow flowers and seeds. Onions are biennials.
They take a year to grow into a bulb, and the spend the next year growing a flower and forming seeds.

Many people do grow onions from seeds, but it’s the long game.

If you want to grow onions, I highly suggest purchasing “onion sets”. You only have to wait 2-3 months for a harvest. Verses if you plant from seeds it’ll be more like 4-5 sometimes 6 months.

They’ll make wonderful greens!! We grow a few hundred onions every year and I plant the ones going bad. It’s a real treat and a way to turn a lemons into lemonade!
