I’ve been trying to save this poor thing for a week due to sentimental value. Is it a lost cause? The stem is green and firm but now no leaves left

RIP sweet little seedling. But I would like to know your whole life story…

Depends on how many true leaves it could form before whatever that cause this took out all of the leaves. Tomatoes do form a sort of energy battery, from which they can regrow even when cut all the way down to soil.

I’m not sure if a tomato this young will even have that sort of thing though. I’ve only seen this on woody and thick tomato stems.

IMO It’s not over until it’s DEAD dead. Make sure it has good lighting and be very careful to not overwater. I’ve had much younger and smaller twigs return from worse looking states and recover.

Put it out of its misery. I’ve had to do this to plants before and it feels more humane than watching them scream in agony especially when they are sure to die.
