Are you looking for a way to improve your overall health? The Mediterranean diet may be the key.
A long-term study has found that the plant-forward eating style may lower stroke risk for women.
The findings were published yesterday in the journal “Neurology Open Access.”
Researchers followed more than 100,000 women since 1995. Those who ate a Mediterranean diet were 18% less likely to have any type of stroke. That’s when blood flow to the brain gets blocked or a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding in the brain.
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, fish and olive oil.
It limits meat and dairy and allows for moderate alcohol.
Past studies have found the diet may also lower the risk for dementia, gum disease, depression, breast cancer and diabetes.
