They're both Meijer brand Garbanzo beans, the low cal one is low sodium.

120 is more accurate, probably a misprint.

  2. Have you weighed both cans after draining? Some canned beans have more water/liquid compared to others, so can 1 might have 70g beans, 60g water; while can 2 might have 90g beans, 40g water. Both are 130g per serving, but if the amount of actual beans in a serving is lower, the calories will also be lower.

  3. The recipes are different. The 2nd can contains more fat (+1.5g), more sugar (+2g) and more protein (+2g) per 130g serving, which make up the 30 calories in difference.

The ingredients in the 120 one says calcium chloride. The other doesnt have it.

They are a different product. Different ingredients. Different breakdown of macros. Different UPC (which is actually where I looked first to find out if it was the same product).

Does that actually make the one have 30% more calories than the other? No. But they are allowed to round off numbers on nutrition labels, and I’m uncertain of the exact rules regarding that. My guess is they are actually fairly close in nutrition with the obvious exception of sodium content. But somehow one gets rounded in one direction and the other in the other.

Another possibility is that the low sodium one simply has less beans in it, and more water. It might look the same and even if you drain the liquid and weigh only the beans it might not be obvious because the different salt content could make them hold more water actually in the beans somehow. I originally thought this was likely, but noticed the low sodium ones have more fiber. You’d expect all the numbers to be lower if that was the case.

One is low sodium and the other is not. Low sodium beans absorb more water during cooking (that’s why some of them will come out of the can exploded a bit). So for the same weight, the low sodium ones are made up more of water. Does that make sense, u/probicus?

Canned beans in general are confusing to me. Why is the liquid included in the serving weight? What ratio of beans to liquid do you have to weigh out?

There are a bunch of differences in the nutritional facts.
    Fat
    Fiber
    Sugar
    Protein
I think one is like a skim milk situation.
