When it comes to grabbing decent scran in Glasgow, there’s really nothing to worry about as we have some amazing places in and around the city, including great pizza spots. So, we recently visited Ask Italian, which is located near the former World’s Tallest Cineworld, on Renfrew Street, and surprisingly found ourselves playing a mystery ‘Box of Chance’ game.

The pair of us were given a box each, with each containing scissors or a pizza wheel. Whoever lands on the scissors gets a free pizza while the winner of the wheel gets 50% off instead. It’s a great way to begin your meal, and fun too – more so for the person who gets the free pizza, of course.

This game is only available in restaurants this National Pizza Day, taking place on Monday, February 9. Multiple guests can take part at the same table, up to a table of six and each guest must also purchase at least one drink to qualify.

What was the restaurant like?

We walked in mid-afternoon on Saturday, just before the evening rush – as there was a show on at nearby Royal Concert Hall – and were taken to our table, greeted with shots of freshly made lemonade. I could’ve drank a jug full of it, it was sweet and refreshing and, for a moment, I thought I was walking along the sunny streets of Tuscany.

Served by friendly staff, including assistant manager Gary, who was very attentive and made sure our visit was as comfortable as can be (with a baby who kept throwing her toys out the pram, literally) we enjoyed the rustic vibes and managed to take it all in before the mad rush started.

What did we eat?

The new range of 14-inch, hand stretched pizzas includes 10 upgrades including Salami Misti, Stromboli and vegetarian and vegan options too. We opted for the vegetarian classic, a Margherita and Primavera pizza.

Both were perfectly cooked, though the shape is still something the team have admitted they are working on to perfect as it wasn’t quite as round as a traditional pizza. Our preference was definitely the cheesy, saucy Margherita. From the kids menu, we chose garlic bread for our little one, which went down a treat while the pasta in a tomato sauce and mushrooms, for the main course, was hardly touched.

The meal was delicious and transported us to the streets of Tuscany.

Chips with the restaurant’s seasoning and a side dip of garlic mayo hit all the right spots for the taste buds. To wash it all down, we got a trio of mocktails – pineapple martini, cherry blossom and passion fruit – which all had their own unique flavours we loved and would go back for.

The dessert menu has loads of options from chocolate to cheesecake. I got the “iconic” signature Lemon dessert which is a 3D deconstructed cheesecake – visually striking, zesty but sweet at the same time.

My other half chose the warm gooey chocolate brownie, with ice cream, which melts in your mouth.

Overall, we had a great experience at the restaurant, which we’d never been to before, and enjoyed our meal and the service that came with it.
