COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – BJ’s Velvet Freez, a popular Colorado Springs landmark, confirmed it will be opening a second location in the city.

BJ’s Velvet Freez is a Colorado Springs ice cream shop that has been serving generations of families for more than 70 years. BJ’s Velvet Freez opened in 1954 and has been serving up not just soft serve but also savory snacks, including pork tenderloin sandwiches, burgers and chicken tenders.

Owner Corey Houger told 11 News the new location will be at 2900 East Platte Avenue, just east of North Circle Drive. Currently, The Human Bean is at that location, but Houger said The Human Bean plans to relocate to another location in the Springs.

“We want to give customers another place to go, you know, so we can cut down a little bit on the wait times in line and then the drive-through,” Houger said, “Just so we can better serve our customers.”

BJ’s only current location is at 1511 North Union Boulevard, just north of Palmer Park Boulevard. Houger confirmed with 11 News that, despite the new venture, nothing is changing at the current location.

“Nothing is going to change with this location,” Houger said. “This has been a great, great location, and this is where it all started in 1954. So we have no intentions of leaving the location.”

Though an official opening date has not been confirmed, BJ’s Velvet Freez is expected to open by the end of March 2026.

I just want to say thank you, Colorado Springs,” Houger said. “This is a great city, you know. We keep getting people moving to the area. We keep growing as a business; we keep getting busier and busier every year. We just want to make sure we’re taking good care of our customers, and whatever it takes, we want to make sure that gets done.”
