Moved here from the Philippines and for Lunar New Year we usually eat tikoy (nian gao). It’s a glutinous rice cake.

Haven’t really actively looked for it yet, so I’d appreciate any leads on where to buy it. Thanks in advance!

If you’re looking for the Chinese version, any dim sum place will sell it. There’s usually a table at the entrance.

Not sure about the Filippino version, but if there is, Seafood City on Eglinton East would have it, or FV Foods.

Nian gao is equivalent to tikoy (my family is Chinese but my mom grew up in the Philippines). Ive previously bought it at Maeli market, but I swear ive seen them at T&T recently?

You’ll find them at any Chinese dimsum place and grocery store. Quality will vary though. There’s a Filipino store on Gerrard “Phillipines Oriental Food Market”, so maybe they’ll have it?

Lots of Chinese grocery stores have these around this time of the year.

  6. I’ve been consistently finding them at C&C Supermarket at near Don Mills. You can probably find it at most Asian grocery stores at least until LNY. They’re usually in the bread/hot foods area but it’ll be in an exposed fridge.

St. Germain Bakeries make amazing ones for LNY. They have multiple locations. I remember getting one at Fairview Mall near the T&T entrance.

*EDIT* – I just saw the 2nd photo and while those rice cakes are more white/pale than the Chinese ones I know (which are brown with a red date in the middle). We slice them up and fry them on the frying pan with oil. Gotta make it a lil crispy!! You could pile them in a Jenga tower if you wanted to slice them that way.

T&T definitely has it. Seen it at both the Fairview and Warden/Steeles locations.

the ones you can get at T&T are pretty much the same (even if they aren’t usually white)! i used to make my own tikoy at home but found that the plain ones i can get at T&T did the job wonderfully anyway (i usually fry them in slices coated with egg too haha). they should be around $7-$10 depending on the size – i literally just checked the T&T website yesterday looking for tikoy for this year too lol (-: i do miss having ube tikoy though……
