Julia Child was, and continues to be, one of the foremost figures in food and food media. Her more than 40 year career consisted of almost 20 cookbooks, TV acclaim for her show, The French Chef, the pride of knowing she helped millions of Americans in the kitchen, and…Costco runs? Yep, Julia Child was just like us! She went to Costco! And it wasn’t just for crates of flour. She also loved a certain Costco food court staple.
Julia’s Costco’s go-to Costco meal? The hot dog
The famously likeable, down-to-earth chef inspired people of all ages and abilities to break down barriers to intimidating French cooking, and it seems that she was fueled, at least in part, by the Costco hot dog.
Bob Spitz, Julia Child’s biography writer, shared that she was among the many adoring fans of the Costco hot dog, and that she would order one every time she went shopping there. The New York Times reports that she loved it “as much as a fine French meal.”

The hype around the Costco hot dog
It’s safe to say that Julia Child knows what she’s talking about when it comes to food, so the next time you’re faced with a pretentious jerk who turns their nose up at cheap food, slam dunk their ego into the trash with the reminder that Julia Child was never too good for the Costco hot dog, famous not just for how tasty it is, but for its absurdly low price. The 1/4 lb hot dog and 20 oz soda combo has been $1.50 since the mid 1980s. Like a weiner in the eye of the hurricane that is grocery prices.
Julia also loved a fast food favorite
And, just when you thought you couldn’t love Julia any more, get this: Her love for “low-brow” doesn’t stop at the Coscto dog, the California resident also frequented In-N-Out. Beef bourguignon? More like beef bourguin-yawn! Give us a double double, animal style, in Julia’s honor.
