What are your thoughts on ash baskets? Ive been looking around for a decently priced one but didnt know if Kick Ash was the end all be all or a knock off Amazon brand was cool too.

I have an knock off, and it’s awesome! Makes cleaning and sorting left over charcoal a breeze! It’s worth it!

I don’t have one yet, just Increases airflow and makes cleaning a bit easier, although on the weekends I’m not grilling I enjoy taking it apart to clean and dust down, I will be buying for this year though.

I used the onlyfire in an akorn, then moved it into a large bge that it’s designed for. Bought another onlyfire for my big Joe and have been super happy with it, especially that the divider was included. However, the kick ash can is really nice and they seem to be the only game in town for those. If you’re not using the can, then I don’t think you really need a basket but I highly recommend the can.

You need 2 zone for steak, so I’d say it’s necessary

i’ve been using the Kick Ash for years. the way i prep my KJ is to take the basket and give it a shake, then put it down (with unburned charcoal from the previous cook) on an ash can. i then take a dedicated Shop Vac and vacuum up the ash, put the basket back in, and add new charcoal. this is so efficient that, when i got a WSM, the first accessory i bought for it was an ash basket so i could do the same thing.

i don’t think the brand really matters. in fact, the Kick Ash has one really annoying thing in that, when you use it (at least in a CJ II), the deflector plates can no longer rest on the bottom most rung of the rack. you have to balance them on the prongs of the basket which, for me, is always a PITA. i would recommend getting a basket that doesn’t have this problem.

I just bought one and it’s life changing in terms of cleaning and I honestly think it promotes better airflow

Honestly you don’t need it it’s much easier too just shake leftover charcoal with hand and ash drops through the holes in the bottom that’s it. I bought one but don’t use it cause it makes it harder to reach small coals below the basket

Knock off is better. Comes with handles & fits better imo.

Necessary? No. Extremely nice to have and I’d never go back? Absolutely.

Best accessory ever. Not sure why the KJ doesn’t come with one. It makes clean up easier and allows for better air flow.

I got one as a gift, all it does is massively increase your charcoal usage, and bizarrely I needed to take the guts out and shop-vac more often. I’d save your money for something else personally.

  12. Can anyone with experience tell me what the pros and cons of the KJ basket vs a knock off basket?

You can and should absolutely get a less expensive one on Amazon.

Kick Ash is really only necessary for the ash bucket. There is no less expensive version of that out there.

I bought a knock off and it’s the single best upgrade I’ve made to my KJ and would recommend it as essential to any new KJ owner
