ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KWCH) – A home in Arkansas City has extensive damage after a fire started in the kitchen.

On Sunday at around 5:35 p.m., first responders in Arkansas City were sent to the 700 block of South C Street after reports of a house being on fire.

Firefighters found a two-story house with fire coming from the southeast corner of the first floor. They also found heavy smoke on the second floor.

Everyone inside the house got outside safely. Crews were on scene for several hours to make sure the fire was extinguished.

The fire, caused by a stove burner accidentally left on, caused significant damage throughout the house. The damage is estimated at $40,000 total.

This is the second cooking-related house fire in Arkansas City in the past week. The Fire Marshal, Gary Bowker, is encouraging residents to always pay attention when cooking and to make sure their homes have functional smoke alarms.
