Price: ~$350 USD, Lunch, Dec'25

Location: Porto, Portugal

Seating: Table seats with direct ocean view

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, led by Rui Paula, is one of the most recommended dining experiences in Porto, sitting right by the Atlantic Ocean.

The restaurant was designed by renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and sits right on the rocks overlooking the ocean. The setting is truly stunning, and I honestly think the location alone is worth the visit. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks adds something really special to the atmosphere and makes the whole dining experience feel even more memorable. I would recommend going for the lunch seating, like I did, so you can fully enjoy the ocean views and watch the waves. I’ve read that during dinner it can get quite dark, so you might not be able to appreciate the scenery as much.

Courses: A multi-course tasting menu (~21 courses). We opted for the full menu experience (21-course), though the 6- or 12-course options are also available. Of course, the portions in the 21-course menu were adjusted to be smaller so you can actually finish it — but you’ll still leave the restaurant extremely full.

The restaurant focuses heavily on seafood and local Portuguese ingredients, presented in a refined, gastronomic style. The ingredients were very fresh, and many dishes were beautifully plated and clearly executed with strong technique. Seafood courses stood out for their clean, fresh flavors and balanced seasoning, showing best of the Atlantic. I must say the kitchen does a good job of showcasing Portuguese coastal produce in a modern way.

Special callout to the “Seabass in its habitat” course — it was plated to look like the cliffs and ocean surrounding the restaurant, with the seabass designed to represent the restaurant itself. They creatively used ingredients like algae and other natural elements from the sea around the restaurant, which added nice texture and flavor without overpowering the fish. It was a great example of creativity with taste!

That said, while everything was very good and thoughtfully composed, most dishes leaned more towards subtle and elegant rather than bold or surprising — it felt like the restaurant focuses on refinement rather than explosive flavors. Given the large number of courses, I was hoping they would incorporate one or two dishes with stronger or more impactful flavors to create a bit more variety and contrast.

However, overall courses were beautifully balanced, with delicate flavors that slowly build throughout the meal rather than hitting you with intense contrasts right away. They even added some fun, playful touches during the meal — like small puzzles or interactive moments — which made the dining experience feel much more unique.

Note: Even though I opted for the full 21-course experience, small parts of the menu felt slightly repetitive at times, with a few dishes sharing similar flavor profiles. As a result, at times, the longer menu felt more like a "continuous long journey" rather than a series of distinct standout moments. However, the food was still very tasty overall, and I still found myself looking forward to each new dish as it arrived.

Service: Service was professional and attentive overall. Staff explained each dish clearly and the pacing was smooth, pretty much what you’d expect from a 2-star restaurant.

Cost to Performance: It’s definitely on the higher end for Porto. However, when you factor in the oceanfront setting, the quality of the ingredients, and the overall experience, it offers excellent value — especially considering the number of courses included at that price.

Personal Rating: 9.5/10

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova was honestly one of the most memorable dining experiences in Porto for me. The oceanfront setting is incredible, especially during lunch when you can fully enjoy the waves and scenery. The food focuses more on refinement and balance rather than bold, explosive flavors, but the execution and creativity — especially dishes like the “Seabass in its habitat” — really stood out. Even though the long 21-course menu felt slightly repetitive at times, the overall meal was still very tasty, and I kept looking forward to each new dish. Combined with the view, the atmosphere, and the quality of ingredients, it felt like a very complete and special experience.

Personally, I would rank Casa de Chá da Boa Nova as my #1 dining experience in Portugal. My personal ranking would be: CCBN > Belcanto > Alma ≥ Fifty Seconds > The Yeatman.
