PLS Food Distribution Inc. is recalling 40-pound cases of chicken wings split due to semicarbazide contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced.

The Class 3 recall affects product with code 251119-22A distributed to hotels, restaurants and institutional customers in Quebec. The recall was initiated Feb. 10, with the CFIA publishing the alert Feb. 17.

The agency is advising food service establishments not to use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product.

Semicarbazide is a chemical compound that can form in food during certain processing or packaging conditions. Class 3 recalls are issued for products that are unlikely to cause adverse health consequences but violate food safety regulations.

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation that may lead to additional product recalls. The agency is verifying that industry is removing the recalled product from the marketplace.
