After about a year of getting into espresso and loving the attention to detail this hobby seems to require, I've found myself looking for small improvements to my flow and stumbled on this Baratza Encore Portafilter Holder (https://makerworld.com/en/models/2202478-baratza-encore-51mm-portafilter-holder#profileId-2393038).

Seeing other people's grinders, I've always been jealous of this aspect so I was very excited to give this a go and to my delight it fit my Baratza Encore ESP perfectly and so did the portafilter itself. The only issue? It's a lot messier than grinding into a dosing cup and pouring it into my portafilter… the ground coffee (naturally) forms a mound and then falls off the sides.

My question is, do I try to carve out a slot for my funnel to fit as well? I'm hesitant as I don't have easy access to a 3D printer. Is there a more straightforward solution I'm missing? Is it never going to be as clean as grinding into a dosing cup? I realise this is a bit of a non-problem but it's these little details that only this community can understand.

P.S. I do intend to paint it black when I get the chance.

Get a deeper basket or use lower coffee dose.

Or get a WDT tool and gently tap the portafilter on the counter before stirring the coffee bed.

I wouldn’t use fuzzy skin option for this, just makes it that much harder to clean

Room for a funnel would work great! When I had a Sette I would move the arms out of the way so I could hold my funnel under the grinder, it was just too messy otherwise.

Give it a slight upward angle, makes room for a funnel, and paint it black

  5. To make it cleaner, grind into a cup or other container first and use a magnetic portafilter funnel (there’s 3d print models) and pour the coffee from the cup into the portafilter. You can give the coffee a shake in the cup too to break up the worst clumps before you pour it in the portafilter.

If I grind into the portafilter directly with the magentic funnel on, I make sure the funnel is all the way against the ceiling. Even then it is a bit messy, but at least the grinds go inside your funnel. I have some grinds between the funnel and the portalfilter that drop down when you remove the funnel, but that is probably because I have a cheap ali express funnel that has a tiny gap.

the mound-and-avalanche is a rite of passage lol. magnetic dosing funnel changed my life for this exact reason – grinds go in, nothing escapes. if you can get someone to remix the model with a funnel slot built in you’d have the endgame setup honestly. until then i just grind into a dosing cup and pour. less cool looking but my counter thanks me.

Don’t use fuzzy skin. Also, plastic isn’t a good option

I’m getting my first 3d printer in the new couple weeks. I’m going to be making all sorts of espresso stuff, especially for my ESP. I’m after the same design. I want a portafilter holder that also fits the funnel.

Make space for a funnel on top of the portafilter and spray a bit of water on the bean before grinding.

Very cool – but…. As others have said best with no fuzzy skin – small layers to reduce places for coffee to sit – maybe sand it smooth or acetone? – if coffee spills then as others have said a funnel, preferably a removable one, is a sensible addition.

Change it so the portafilter handle is angled up a bit more

    great job!

if you’d want to try a less messy print, I’d try to lower the portafilter position and add space for a funnel..
    Funnel could also be printed.
another benefit for it will be that you will have more space for the grounds to fall to and less chance of clogging the chute.

    good luck, love your solution!

Print one that fits with the dosing funnel on
