Wine Squares Day ~~3~~ 4
We all know it was going to be Caymus so let’s skip it!
What’s a cheap wine punching above its weight? Not crazy QPR, but decent enough it would be mistaken for a mid range wine?

I’ll go with E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône
La vielle ferme.
It’s Perrin family two-buck-chuck but it’s easy to enjoy a 1.5 L for a good price.
Cote Mas. Liter bottles of Red, Rose, White, and Orange for $12.99. When you’re having cheap take out, these pair well
Jadot Beaujolais Villages
Part of me wants to nominate all <$13 wine from Chile, which wouldn’t technically be true, but I feel like Chile (and Argentina for that matter) constantly over delivers at least “mid” wines at a cheap price (2026 standards).
I know it’s not in the spirit of this game, but that’s what my heart tells me.
Otherwise, anything introductory Guigal gets my vote.
Bogle Petite Sirah.
Perrin family
Oyster bay sauvy B? It’s like bud light. Would I prefer something else? Yes. Is it crushable and quenching? Yes.
Hey I was waiting for day 3 to do some name shaming
My taste meh / costs lots would have been Coulée de Serrant.
Kirkland Côtes Du Rhône.
Jadot Macon-Villages.
Currently £11 in Tesco.
Reliable unoaked Chardonnay that tastes like Chardonnay.
Perfect “house white”.
Campo Vieja Rioja (reserva), punches far above it’s price-weight
How about some screw top Picpoul for a white and many Monastrells for red.
Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier 12$ at Costco
Penfolds Koonunga Hill
Zaccagini Montepulciano D’Abruzzo
Juan Gil
I’ve always recommended Campo Viejo as a great cheap wine. That is my go-to cheap wine and I love that I can find it almost anywhere.
You can still find Riscal Rioja reserva for like 15 bucks sometimes!
Pick any Kirkland bottle. They all taste mid and the only reason people fawn over them is because they are cheap. Not saying that as a knock. It is what they are shooting for.
Bogle Merlot
Kendall Jackson Chardy
Lab red?
La Vieille Ferme Rosé, especially in box form.
What about Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva? 2016 is normally about £15 and tastes pretty darned good!
