Bergen County’s Allendale is no stranger to fine dining. But Allendale Social uniquely combines fine French Cuisine with a carefully-balanced upscale yet relaxed setting. The restaurant offers an elevated but approachable menu that blends traditional French techniques with international flavor profiles.

The cozy, 1,500-square-foot Allendale Social can seat 40 indoors. Meanwhile, a back patio surrounded by hedges offers an outdoor dining experience for up to 42 guests. Two team members behind the restaurant, Executive Chef Joey Sergentakis and General Manager James Mazzuto, grew up in the area. In fact, they both attended high school in Allendale, and their families still live in the area. Chef Joey earned a Michelin star as the Chef de Cuisine at Café Gray Deluxe in Hong Kong’s Upper House hotel. He’s worked alongside renowned chefs including Daniel Boulud, Philippe Rochat, Alain Ducasse, and Gray Kunz.

Highlights of the Allendale Social menu include raw/chilled oysters, tuna tartare, grilled gem lettuce, and sweet corn arancini. Other noteworthy dishes include Korean fried chicken, white polenta fries, plus pastas like crab and yuzu risotto and beef ragu rigatoni.

The favorite dish of Owner/Founder Daniel Grey, however, is the lobster thermidor, a modern riff on the traditional classic. At Allendale Social, they begin preparing the dish by pan cooking the lobster. Then, the tail is pulled out of the shell and the shell is stuffed full of seafood risotto. Next, the tail is placed on top and gratineed. The dish is finished by shelling the claws and replacing it in their original location. “No bibs or claw crackers are needed, it is the perfect dish,” Daniel says.

Chocolate Dessert

Besides the dinner menu, the Allendale Socal bar complements the menu with a selection of beers, wines, and signature cocktails. Signature drinks include the Charlie Girl (vodka, cranberry, St Germain, elderflower tonic, and mint); and Uno Mas (tequila, Cointreau, lime, blackberry, and ginger.)

But their signature old fashioned, dubbed the Humidor, is the favorite drink of Chef Joey. To make it, they bacon fat wash bourbon. This infusion technique leaves the essence of the bacon without any of the bacon or grease. They then use maple syrup as the sweetener. “It’s like dipping your bacon in maple syrups in a boozy, fun way,” explains Chef Joey.
