The idea of French wine may sound a little intimidating. Long menus with even longer names we struggle to pronounce and someone swirling a glass maybe a little too seriously.

Well, 2KW is looking to reset the framework, launching French at Five, a monthly rooftop wine hour where the ties come off, the corks pop and French wine gets a little loose. The drop-in-only tasting is hosted by Jono Hersey from The French Wine Centre and is exactly what it promises to be, a high-energy tasting of seriously good French wines, without the wine snobbery.

It’s not a masterclass, nor a lecture but purely French wine… on a rooftop.

The monthly activation is starting this Thursday, February 26, running from 5pm to 6pm, but head sommelier Dan McEvoy invites guests to stay on after for drinks, snacks and sunset views.

“It’s a beautiful way to either make an introduction into French wine and what all the hype’s all about, or to continue your knowledge into the world of French wine,” Dan says. “I love the vibe on Thursday nights up at 2KW Bar and Restaurant, and this just adds to it.”

“I’ve given Jono the reigns on picking out the best wines from his extraordinary palate and showing them off each month.”

“He is an incredible conversationalist and articulates his words incredibly well when it comes to French wine, and I can’t wait to learn a bit more and just soak it all in.”

Each month guests can expect a rolling line up of four to five wines, from rotating regions. The lineup changes monthly, but the vibe stays the same.

To kickstart the three wines in February are a 2023 Domaine Jean Pabiot Pouilly Fumé – Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, a 2023 Domaine Agnes et Didier Dauvissat Petit Chablis – Chardonnay from Northern Burgundy and a 2022 Domaine Frederic Berne Morgon ‘Corcelette’ – Gamay from Beaujolais’ most celebrated village.

“Plus each month a mystery premium wine will be free for tasting,” Dan tells us.

And a little snack or even a main meal can never go astray. “Our bar menu runs all day, and there are some beautiful seafood options that pair beautifully with some of these white wines that Jono is showing off.”

There’s no taking notes, or quizzes, and no pressure to detect whispers of wet apples or earthy undertones. Just rock up, grab a glass and see where the French wine takes you – if you fall in love with a taste, bottles will be available for purchase.

“I want wine to be able to be accessible to everyone, whether it be a taste, a glass or a bottle.”

French at Five, is held on their iconic terrace bar, with spectacular views of the Adelaide Oval, Festival Theatre and Government House, offering the perfect spot for after work drinks or pre-dinner views.

Don’t just let your day dreams transport you to a certain city of love, 2KW’s is providing the wine and the rooftop – Bonsoir.
