Another Mediterranean restaurant in San Luis Obispo just opened its doors, and it’s a familiar face.

Petra Mediterranean Pizza and Grill opened Friday in the SLO Public Market, serving chicken shawarma, lamb gyros, falafel and pizza, the market announced on its Instagram.

“Honestly, I’m very proud,” general manager Jessica Walker told The Tribune. “I started here about two years ago, and just in these two years, we’ve made such leaps and bounds, and to see us go from one location to two and just doing things we never thought we could do with this location, it’s heartwarming to see.”

The popular Mediterranean restaurant took over the former stand-alone building at 134 Tank Farm Road where Brooks Burgers used to be.

“The Public Market has such a fun energy to it with such an interesting set of vendors that we are just excited to be a part of,” Walker said. “On this side of town, we’re able to reach so many more people.”

While the restaurant’s first day was “popping,” on Thursday the business unlocked its doors for members of the community to stop by, Walker said. The restaurant gave away 250 free meals to whoever curiously came by Petra’s doors.

“Yesterday we had sort of a soft launch,” she said. “Instead of doing what most restaurant’s do, which is a friends and family night, we just decided to unlock our doors and whatever happened, happened.”

For Petra’s second location, the menu items will be the exact same as its first location on Higuera Street at the same prices. The only change? Meals are served with dishes and silverware compared to the compostable plates and recyclable utensils in its first spot.

“We knew we had a winning mix with our recipes and our food,” Walker said. “We just wanted to bring a date night type of energy to our menu.”

The Public Market location has one new menu item: a “fun addition special” that will unveil in the next few days, and is on the sweet side.

“It’s the perfect sweet treat to add to the end of the meal,” Walker said.
