The foodie website Chowhound has named Monica’s Mercato & Salumeria in Boston as the top Italian deli in the United States. The deli, which sits in the broader North End of Boston, offers a bite of Italian cuisine in Massachusetts.

According to Chowhound, the Mendoza family, who have run Monica’s since 1997, also operates Vinoteca di Monica. The family’s full-service restaurant pairs an extensive wine list with homemade pasta sauces and quality meats and seafood.

Writing for Chowhound, Stephanie Mee makes a recommendation for customers:

“If you can only pick up one thing at Monica’s, many say it should be the Italian sub. In fact, it’s so beloved that it made our list of the hands-down best Italian subs in the United States. The sandwich features prosciutto, mortadella, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, hot pickles, onion, oil, and balsamic vinegar packed into a pillowy roll.”

Beyond the deli, the business also offers bread, wine, cheese, and pantry staples as part of its Italian food offerings.

Monica’s Mercato & Salumeria is at 130 Salem St. in Boston.
