THEATER DISTRICT, Manhattan (PIX11) — After serving Italian cuisine to theater performers, New Yorkers and visitors for more than six decades, the historic Italian restaurant Barbetta will serve its final meal.

The eatery, which specializes in cuisine from the Piemonte region of Italy, will close its doors on Friday, concluding its run as one of the oldest family-owned restaurants in New York City.

“For more than six decades, Laura’s vision shaped this beloved house, and it was her wish that guests continue to gather here in the spirit she cherished.”

The announcement of Barbetta’s closing comes after the passing of its owner, Laura Maioglio. The New York native took over in 1962 after her father and the restaurant’s founder, Sebastiano Maioglio.

Operated from a Brownstone on restaurant row at 321 West 46th St., Barbetta was known for its elegant interior design, open-air garden patio and white truffle dishes. Due to its rare nature, Barbetta obtained truffles from its own hunters and hounds in Piemonte, Italy.

The restaurant’s menu introduced New Yorkers to the unique cuisines and wines of the Piemonte region, including stuffed pasta known as agnolotti, risotto with white truffle, slow-roasted Piemontese rabbit and the northern Italian dish polenta.

During its 120-year run, Barbetta has been featured in numerous movies and TV shows, won the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence and was recognized as a historic establishment by the Association of Historical Places of Italy.

Barbetta welcomes diners to its final day of service, where they will offer its extensive wine collection at half off its listed price.
